Conveyer 800

The Litani River, the longest river in Lebanon, provides water for land spanning from the Beqaa Valley in Western Baalbek to the city of Tyre in South Lebanon. The Conveyor 800 project is planned to carry around 8.2 cubic meters per second of water from the Qaraoun Lake to irrigate 1,500 hectares of agricultural land under 800 meters of elevation. The project serves 98 villages in Nabatieh, Marjayoun plain and South Litani to the southern borders.

TB Associates was tasked with developing hydraulic models for the planned structure as well analyzing extreme operational cases in order to confirm the proper function of the regulation system including the overall stability for load cases such as simultaneous complete closure or opening of single or multiple branches, the effect of a breach, ensuring closure of a safety over speed valve, and no special surge occurrence.

Furthermore, the analysis was performed to check the hydraulic performance of one of the radial gates at various low openings in order to find out the minimum permissible flow that could be transited by the canal. Accordingly, a 3D model was developed to investigate turbulence, cavitation, and flow fluctuations deemed as main causes of vibration at low openings.
